Hermès Bags are Being Returned Because They Smell Like Skunk

Hermes Birkin Skunk Stink

Smell is the sense most closely tied to memory, and it’s not uncommon to hear bag lovers gush about the lovely leather scent that emanates from a brand new luxury bag. Some brands, like Dior and Tom Ford, even work that scent into fine perfumes because of its close association with luxury and quality. Unfortunately for some customers, Hermès’ bags have recently acquired a new smell–skunk. (Or weed, depending on who you ask.)

This story start over at our PurseForum, where members in the Hermès section have reported skunky-smelling leather bags dating back to December 2013. From the information they’ve pooled in over 150 pages of comments, the problem becomes apparent when a bag is left in sunlight even for a few minutes; the heat and light bring out the stink, which is bad enough that the bag owners then have to open windows to air out their homes and cars. It’s not a subtle, close-range smell, apparently.

New York Post writer (who I’m guessing is also a Forum member) noticed the complaints and went to Hermès to get some answers, but the notoriously tight-lipped French brand didn’t return her inquiries. Based on the feedback from shoppers on our Forum, the problem seems to be most common among bags made of the brand’s popular Togo leather, although Epsom and Clemence leathers have also been identified as skunky. As the Post points out, Hermès makes many different models in the affected leathers and ships them worldwide, so the issue is not limited to a particular boutique or region.

If you have a recently purchased bag that you’d like to test, our members suggest sitting it in direct sunlight and allowing it to warm up for a few minutes. If you notice the smell, Hermès boutiques should all be aware of the problem by now, and it seems as though the only solution is to send the bags off to France to be rebuilt in different leather over a period of months. That suggests that the issue was created somewhere in the leather production process, and based on our members’ feedback, it’s not something that will fade with time.

If you’ve experienced this issue, let us know which of your bags it affects how Hermès handled it in the comments.

Hermes Spring/Summer 2015 Collection – Paris Fashion Week

Hermes

The classy and chic Hermes spring/summer 2015 collection came to put a memorable end to yet another Paris Fashion Week and this year’s fashion month in general. Actually, it also puts an end to the career of Christophe Lemaire as a creative director of the luxury French fashion house, as he wants to thoroughly dedicate himself to his own fashion line now. “Working for Hermès has been a great pleasure: a profoundly enriching experience on both a human and professional level. I am proud of what we have built together. My own label is growing in an important way and I now really want and need to dedicate myself to it fully,” Lemaire stated as he announced about his departure. So, no wonder, the new Hermes spring 2015 rtw collection was a highly anticipated one to be unveiled at PFW this year and everyone had been eager to see a stunning show, as it always is with Hermes fashion presentations!

On a sand-covered Lemaire sent a lightweight and relaxed collection, “out of the shadows, into the light”. An enchanting understating elegance was coming out of each and every look demonstrated, which made the entire collection so pleasant to the eye and so easy to wear. Slightly slouchy and oversized, textured and sporty motifs could also be felt, although elegance and refinement were the focus of the collection. Modesty was expressed through below-the-knee lengths, dresses, shirts and jumpsuits that never flashed skin. Everything looked highly proportioned and harmonious, classy and modern.

The neutral color palette chosen is one of the aspects that make this collection so versatile. We saw lovely cream, beige, white and sand hues, which were later joined by navy blues, mustards, dusty pinks and some reds. The majority of the looks presented were into a monochrome mood, however, the finale of the show also presented some graphic geometric patterns, including stripes and spring’s popular checkered patterns.

Wrapping up in style was literally the message of the Hermes spring/summer 2015 collection, as we saw many looks inspired from scarfs. The elegant wrap skirts and wrap dresses are other proves of the statement. There we saw a beige below-the-knee wrap dress with its one end handing freely from the neck of the model. The same style philosophy was applied to a charming mustard blouse, which was coming matched with slightly oversized tailored pants in cream.

Delicate pleats, draping and layering are other motifs describing the new Hermes collection. Some of the looks were adorned with big straps of fabric used as belts, which quite resembled sweaters tied around the waists. The show also demonstrated stylish and sophisticated separates and textured straight dresses, which all adhered to the main style philosophy of the collection.

In terms of the accessories showcased, the Hermes spring/summer 2015 collection brought stunning platform heeled sandals, as well as iconic Hermes bags and clutches. Overall, it was a timeless collection, extremely laidback and luxurious, the garments of which you can wear everywhere and anytime!

Hermes Lady Carina Flats

Hermes

There is a clear difference between the flats of Hermes and from other brands. While the rest make theirflats for women to walk, Hermes crafts them for women to dance. A very intelligent move indeed, they take flats for what they were; ballerina shoes. And what features does Ballerina’s need? Flexibility and comfort.

All black keeps the classic together, match them with any clothes and styles and the best of all; you don’t need to baby them like white or pink colors, especially because shoes get dirty very soon. Made from strong goat leather and crafted with honey rubber sole leather. The signature ‘Hermes Paris’ are clearly printed on the inside.

Heritage Auctions’ Super Rare Hermès Birkin Sold For $185,000

Hermes

Hermes-30cm-Matte-Himalayan-Nilo-Crocodile-Birkin-with-Diamond-Hardware

Not long ago, we brought you the tale of one very rare bag: the Hermès Himalayan Crocodile Birkin above, complete with pavé diamond hardware. The bag, arguably the most sought-after in the world, was about to be sold at Heritage Auctions in Beverly Hills, and some speculated that it might break price records. It didn’t quite make it that high, but it did sell for more than a respectable family home does in many perfectly lovely areas of our fine country.

The record-holder that the Himalayan bag needed to beat was that of another diamond-encrusted crocodile Birkin sold by Heritage, that one in glossy red. It sold for over $200,000, and I still can’t figure out exactly why; it’s a beautiful bag, for sure, but it’s not one that’s known to be rarer than any other exotic, diamond-encrusted Birkin. Perhaps the wife of an oil baron just particularly liked the color.

At any rate, the person who snapped up this Himalayan can count themselves lucky; Hermès has no plans to make additional Himalayan bags available and they’re considered extremely desirable to ultra-rich bag collectors, so snagging one at any price is something of a coup.
